OverviewThree Ways: Which Should You Choose?
The bottom line first: there's no single "best" way, only the one that fits you:
| Option | Best for | Cost | To Cingjing approx. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-drive | High flexibility, want to plan freely | Fuel + parking | 1.5 hr from Taichung |
| Bus | Backpackers, solo travel | About NT$200–300/person | 2.5–3 hr from Taichung |
| Shuttle (OK BUS) | Don't want to drive, traveling in a group | From NT$500–550/person (4-person group) | 1.5–2 hr from Taichung |
If you're traveling with a few friends or family, the shuttle isn't necessarily much more expensive than the bus per person, and it saves you the stress of driving the mountain road, so it's well worth considering.
Self DriveSelf-Drive: The Highway 14A Guide
Self-driving is the most popular option, all the way along Highway 14A. The route is clear and easy to navigate and needs no special skill, but there are a few things to watch on your first time up.
Suggested Route
From Taichung HSR Wuri Station, take Provincial Highway 74 toward Nantou, then Provincial Highway 14 after Nantou City, then Highway 14A after central Puli, climbing all the way; about 20 minutes past Wushe brings you to Cingjing. The whole trip is about 85 km, roughly 1.5 hours in normal traffic.
Taichung HSR Wuri Station: about 1.5 hours (85 km)
Central Taichung: about 1.5–2 hours (depending on traffic)
Sun Moon Lake Shuishe Pier: about 1.5 hours (62 km, via Hwy 21 → Hwy 14A)
Central Nantou: about 1 hour
Central Puli: about 30–40 minutes
Highway 14A Driving Tips
Highway 14A has many curves, and the section above Wushe is almost all switchbacks, but the road is wide enough, so as long as you keep a steady speed it's quite safe. A few key points:
- Don't overtake: sightlines are poor on the mountain road and oncoming traffic appears suddenly; a light tap of the horn before a curve is both etiquette and a safety cue
- Keep a longer following distance: when the car ahead slows, you need enough room to react
- Rain or heavy fog: wet roads and low visibility mean a more conservative speed; if the fog is too thick, it's best to wait at Wushe for it to clear
- Driving up at night: the mountain road has no street lights, so if you're not familiar with it, drive up during the day; pushing on late at night is risky
- Check your vehicle: long uphill stretches put a heavy load on the engine and brakes, so check your brakes and tires before setting off
Parking
SheepVillage has a parking lot, free for guests, for sedans and SUVs; just follow the signs in when you arrive. There are also paid parking lots beside Cingjing Farm, where spaces are limited after 9am on peak-season weekends, so set off early or rely on the homestay's lot.
By BusBy Bus: You Can Reach the Mountain Without a Car
Travelers without a car can take a bus straight to Cingjing. Service isn't as frequent as in the city, but with good timing the trip goes smoothly.

Shuttle ServiceOK BUS Shuttle Service
SheepVillage partners with Huafu Travel (OK BUS) to offer chartered shuttle service from Taichung, Sun Moon Lake, and other points. It suits travelers who'd rather not drive the mountain road, or who want to relax and enjoy the scenery along the way.
The shuttle runs on a 4-person minimum, with fares by departure point. Taking Taichung HSR as an example, NT$500/person costs less than the fuel and parking of driving, with no mountain-road fatigue to worry about, so overall it's great value.
